Claude Desktop brings Anthropic’s assistant to your Mac menu bar and file system. Unlike a pure web session, the desktop app persists conversation context, cached attachments, update packages, and diagnostic logs on disk. Over weeks these files can reach several gigabytes — especially if you work with large documents or enable features that cache locally for offline responsiveness.

Clearing Claude Desktop cache is usually safe when you focus on caches, logs, and stale update folders. You may lose locally cached conversation previews until Claude re-syncs from the server, but your Anthropic account history typically remains available when you sign in again. Always quit the app before deleting files it might have open.

Where Claude Desktop stores data

On macOS 14 Sonoma and later, Claude Desktop primarily uses:

  • ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/ — main app data, databases, and session artifacts.
  • ~/Library/Caches/com.anthropic.claude* — short-lived cache files and compiled resources.
  • ~/Library/Logs/Claude/ or similar — debug and crash logs.
  • ~/Library/Saved Application State/ — window restoration (small, optional to clear).

Exact folder names can shift between Claude versions. Sort by Date Modified in Finder to spot update leftovers — folders with old version numbers are often safe to remove after confirming the current app launches correctly.

Step-by-step manual cleanup

  1. Sign out or quit Claude Desktop — Claude menu → Quit Claude. Verify no Claude helper processes in Activity Monitor.
  2. Navigate to Application Support — ⌘⇧G → ~/Library/Application Support/Claude.
  3. Identify cache vs config — folders named Cache, GPUCache, Code Cache, logs, or tmp are usually regenerable. Preferences and identity files should stay unless you want a full reset.
  4. Clear Caches directory — ⌘⇧G → ~/Library/Caches, search for “anthropic” or “claude”, move matching cache folders to Trash.
  5. Empty logs optionally — delete contents of log folders, not the parent Library structure.
  6. Relaunch and sign in — Claude may re-download assets; first launch can feel slower.

Using AI Agent Clean for Claude

AI Agent Clean’s AI Agent Clean module lists Claude Desktop alongside Cursor, Codex, and Open Design. Each group shows size by category so you can uncheck anything uncertain before cleanup.

  1. Open AI Agent Clean → AI Agent Clean.
  2. Locate the Claude section in scan results.
  3. Review logs, caches, and update debris separately.
  4. Confirm cleanup — files move to Trash, not secure erase.

For developers running both Cursor and Claude, combine this guide with Cursor cache cleanup and run Smart Scan once to catch all AI tool junk.

Safety warnings
  • Do not delete Application Support while Claude is running.
  • Removing identity or keychain-related files may force re-authentication — have your Anthropic credentials ready.
  • Local-only drafts not yet synced may be lost if you clear the wrong database — when in doubt, skip that category.
  • Use Trash first; permanent delete only after verifying Claude works.
  • AI Agent Clean never uploads file contents — scans stay on your Mac. See Privacy Policy.

macOS 14+ permissions

Third-party cleaners need Full Disk Access to enumerate all Library subfolders. Enable AI Agent Clean in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Full Disk Access. Claude Desktop itself manages its own sandbox; your cleanup tool is what needs permission to see the full picture.

When to clear vs when to wait

Clear caches if Claude feels sluggish, disk space is tight, or you just upgraded and suspect duplicate update folders. Skip aggressive cleanup if you rely on offline cached conversations during travel — wait until you are back on a stable connection.

Troubleshooting after cleanup

If Claude Desktop fails to launch after you cleared caches, restore the most recent Trash item from Application Support first. Corrupted partial deletes usually mean the app was running during deletion. On macOS 14+, re-granting network permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security can resolve first-launch prompts that repeat after a reset. Keep one backup export of important conversation snippets outside Claude if you routinely clear aggressive categories.

Pair periodic Claude cleanup with Smart Scan every four to six weeks rather than waiting for disk-full warnings — steady maintenance beats emergency deletes.
